Each of the brushes has the red, circular logo 'Taiyodo 太陽堂', the business that made them, at the top, and another plain white sticker lower down with the Chinese characters 太陽堂製 ('Made by the Taiyang Tang'). Two of the brushes are lacquered red, one lacquered black, and two are plain bamboo. Each has the Chinese characters 劍橋大學李約瑟用筆 (Brush for the use of Joseph Needham of Cambridge University) inscribed on it, and are of varying length. Where or when he was given them is not certain.

These items were originally gathered together by Ellis Minns (and his original label remains with the items) and also include honorary doctorates and memberships of learned societies. The arrangement has been maintained.

Places visited include a Taoist temple in Upper Serangoon Road, Singapore [There is also an envelope of photographs of this temple]; the Tao Kuan in Hong Kong; 'Tateshina's new 'parish schurch' Shokoji'; Toji Temple, Kyoto, Japan; 'Togari-Ishi Museum and Reconstructed Neolithic Jomon-period Thatched Huts';

Many of the documents arrise from Needham's visits to shrines and temples. They documents also include an envelope containing photographs of Dorothy and Joseph Needham and Lu Gwei-Djen at Kinkasan, Sakanami and Yamadera.

Joseph Needham's file title reads 'Maths, misc > 70 [Dorothy Needham] > 71, 2nd Edition Material'.

This book contained:
- 1 handwritten letter from Edward [McEwen] (Society of Archer-Antiquaries) to Joseph Needham, 17 Jan. 1986 and a compliments slip with translations of 7 words
- Handwritten notes relating to the book by Teruyo Ushiyama [Ushiyama Teruyo 牛山輝代], 6 Mar. 1986 and 12 Mar. 1986.

This series consists of a wide range of business, legal and official Chinese documents dating mainly from the nineteenth century, particularly from the first half of the century. Many of the papers concern or are connected to Jardine, Matheson & Co. and its members. There are also a few items in English, French, Japanese, Parsi, Portuguese and Spanish (in the catalogue the documents are in Chinese unless otherwise stated).

These documents were originally in a box marked 'Japan 84'.
The documents include an envelope of photographs of Lu, Needham and others, in various meetings and at a temple in Japan [The envelope is marked 'G D from Junbeneto [?]']; leaflets for 'Hiraizumi's Chusonji Temple & Golden Hall; other leaflets and photographs.

The cards are divided geographically, with the majority being from Beijing and Japan.

Needham notes that these were 'probably xeroxed for H P-Y [Ho Peng-Yoke] or WL [Wang Ling]'. Most of the original documents are catalogued in SCC2/139-151. The documents also include photocopies of Tenny L. Davis, 'Early Pyrotechnics'', ('Ordnance, 1948); copy of Nambo Heizo's article, 'Who Invented Explosives?', ('Journal of the Industrial Explosives Society, Japan', 1967), and English translation of same.
